THE CHURCH IN
BELIZE
December 7, 1992
Elder Ted E. Brewerton of the Seventy:
In 1952 Elder Spencer W. Kimball
dedicated all of Central America as one land. Since then
we have tried to dedicate each of de seven countries within
this area. This must be done by a member of the Twelve, and
we are happy to say this is our seventh and final country to
be dedicated.
On Tuesday, May 6, 1980, the first four
missionaries arrived in Belize to start the work. On
Sunday, May 11, 1980, the first sacrament meeting was held
in the Bliss Hotel. On Sunday the 25th, seven
people attend sacrament meeting. Shortly thereafter – a
week later on Sunday, June 1 – three more visitors came and
on that day, the first baptism in the history of Belize was
held. Brother Ernesto Alay was baptized. On June 8,
other missionaries then arrived to open Orange Walk, San
Ignacio and other areas. On Sunday, October 5, the first
female was baptized, Sister Iris Jones.
The first district conference was held on
September 13, 1981, with an attendance of 100 people. The
new building of Belize City was completed in December 1984,
and Harold Smith was called as district president in April
17, 1983. In September 1986, other branches were opened in
Soccoths, Benque Viejo, Santa Elena, and Belmopán.
In July 1, 1990, the Honduras Mission was
divided and Belize was placed in the Honduras San Pedro Sula
Mission.
The Belize District which had about 1,000
members in June 1991 was divided into three district –
Belize District with about 400 members and four branches,
San Ignacio with tree branches, and Orange Walk with two
branches. In November 13, 1991, President Gordon B.
Hinckley presided the Regional Conference.
At this particular time we have between
1,200 and 1,300 members in this country with a population of
210,000 people.
